Glossary

DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid. Biopolymer substance to code genetic information and maintain them.
It consists of approx. 3 billion base pairs in human. In DNA, it has been known that, even at a normal state, a frequency of tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of damage per cell has been occurred in a day.If damages are not repaired, it may lead dysfunction and/or canceration of cells. In order to prevent that, there are various systems in cells to detect/repair damages, and to induce cell death when repair is not feasible.
Specificity
It acts only to specific subject, and no impact on other subjects. Here it means a compound has a specific action only.
Throughput
Efficiency. In the field of medical development, it is often used as the expression of "high throughput screening" meaning high efficiency screening.
Target molecule
When drug efficacy is expected by inhibiting function of specific molecule in vivo, such specific molecule is called as "target molecule" as it can be the target of drug discovery.
For many of pharmaceutical products, there are some kind of target molecule existed if the mechanism of action is explored, not only for drugs obtained through the molecular target development (to set the target molecule in advance to develop the new drug).
Data mining
Technology to extract useful information from the accumulated database using analysis procedure such as statistics and artificial intelligence.
In CanBas, we utilize this technology in order to predict activity of unmeasured compounds from results of a lot of measured experiments.
Peptide type/low molecule type
There is no clear definition, but in general, around 1,000-10,000 molecular weight is considered as a border; those compounds with lower molecular weight are called low molecule, and those with higher are called macromolecule.
In the field of drug products, those compounds with several hundreds to thousands of molecular weights are called low molecular compounds in general; many of conventional drug products are low molecular compounds.
Meanwhile, in order to distinguish from nucleotide and antibody medicine (both are high molecular compounds), sometime those other compounds are called as "low molecular compounds".
Peptide is the molecule that amino acid combined together, and its size is various. Molecular weight of CBP501 is 1929.1, and it can be considered as a low molecule type from the view point of molecular weight only; however, it is a peptide with 12 amino acids combined. Therefore, it is called peptide type to distinguish from general low molecule type compounds.
Solid cancer
Cancer developed at any organs and tissues, except "hematological cancer" occurring in blood.
