Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM)
A randomized Phase II clinical trial is underway to evaluate the efficacy of current standard of care Cisplatin/Pemetrexed with and without CBP501 in the treatment of MPM. Participating in these studies are patients from multiple clinical sites in the US, Russia and Argentina. We anticipate completing target enrollment of 63 patients in 2011.
Interim Phase II data from this study was presented by Dr. Lee M. Krug, of Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center, at The 10th International Conference of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group in September 2010.
A disease with high unmet clinical need, MPM is a rare cancer associated with history of chronic asbestos exposure. There are an estimated 30,000 cases per year in 11 industrialized countries, including approximately 2,500 occurrences annually in the US.
Historical untreated median survival of MPM patients is 6 months. The benefit of Cisplatin-based chemotherapy in treating MPM has been well-established. The addition of Pemetrexed in combination with Cisplatin has been shown to confer significant survival advantage (12.1 months) over Cisplatin alone (9.3 months), and we believe that CBP501 will further enhance Cisplatin-based standard of care.
